New 999 Text Service

Posted by craigdon

If you cannot make voice calls, you can now contact the 999 emergency services by SMS text from your mobile phone.  This is going to be particularly useful for those needing 999 assistance in the hills when mobile reception is poor and there is not enough signal to make a call.

You will only be able to use this service if you have registered with emergency SMS first.  Register now: don't wait for an emergency.  To register, text register to 999.  You will get a reply - then follow the instructions you are sent.  This will only take approx two minutes of your time and could save your life!

2010 Tent Shows in full swing!

Posted by craigdon

Our 2010 Tent Shows are well on their way now, in fact, we’re almost at the halfway point!  Can you believe it?  If you came along to see us on those chilly April and May weekends, good on you!  If you didn’t, don’t worry – we’ll be out and about on the road until the end of August so why not pop along a view our huge range of tents in the flesh.

Whether you need a lightweight mountain tent for your latest expedition, or something big enough to fit 3 kids and the dog in we’ve got you covered.  Seeing the tents up at the show is a great way to get a feel for what you’re buying – you can get inside them and see just how much space you’ve got, and if you come along at the right time, we’ll even show you how easy they are to erect and strike.

We’ll be at Duthie Park in Aberdeen this weekend, from 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday so why not pop along and see what we’ve got to offer?  For a full list of our forthcoming shows, check out the website.

Happy camping!

Midge time again...

Posted by craigdon

It’s that time of year again...the sun is out (sometimes), the days are longer – nope, we’re not talking about the Scottish summer, but the midge season!  The bane of every outdoor fan’s life, a plague of midges can sometimes spoil a good day out.  Well, we may have something to help you...our friends at the University of Edinburgh’s Advanced Pest Solutions (APS) are once again bringing us their Midge Forecast.  Covering the whole of Scotland, the forecast uses Google mapping to let you explore the country’s “nuisance levels”.  Using both historical data and weather forecasts, APS can predict a rating between 1 and 5, which lets you see how intense the little blighters are going to be down to postcode level!

New for this year (and for you tech fans out there) you can even get the forecast on your iPhone...just head over to the App Store and you can never be caught out again!  And watch this space – soon you’ll be able to check the forecast here at Craigdon too, we’re just working on the techy bit to get it on our front page!

Mountain Safety

Posted by craigdon

With winter now firmly in our sights, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) have this week been highlighting the risks and responsibilities that go hand in hand with enjoying the outdoors at this time of year.

MCofS Mountain Safety Adviser Heather Morning said: “Last year (2008) there were 387 mountain rescue call-outs in the Scottish mountains, of which 142 were in the winter season.  There were also sadly a total of 20 fatalities during the year, 10 of which occurred during winter.  Folk heading out onto the hills in winter should aim to take advantage of the advice and information on offer, to ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the hill.” Heather went on to say: “As well as making sure you have an ice axe, and crampons that fit, remember that winter days are shorter and colder, so a headtorch with spare batteries is essential. A simple bivouac shelter is also a very good addition to the kit you carry in your winter rucksack.”

The MCofS are also keen to emphasise the importance of having the required skills to be able to enjoy the mountains in winter, so make sure you check over all your kit and know how to use it properly before heading out.  Winter skills courses are an invaluable way of refreshing or enhancing your abilities, and the winter lecture series puts an entertaining and enjoyable spin on honing your mountain safety skills.  MCofS President Chris Townsend added: “The winter safety advice on the MCofS website contains absolutely essential advice and the winter lecture series is a great way of picking up lots of useful tips and life-saving advice. I would urge all hill walkers and climbers to visit the MCofS website and check out the winter safety pages.”

On top of that, we would also point our customers towards the excellent MCofS Mountain Weather Information Service, which provides detailed forecasts by area, as well as the sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS), where you can get daily reports on snow conditions and a forecast for the major climbing areas of Scotland.

And as if that wasn’t enough, if you’re still stuck or just looking for advice then why not pop in to any of our stores and speak to our winter mountaineering experts?!
